History

In 1900 Baltimore was one of the leading ports in America as well as a focal point for trade and transportation on the Chesapeake Bay.  Watermen kept local homes and restaurants well-stocked with fresh seafood.  The oyster industry, although seasonal, was thriving.

The Old Bay Line steamers that sailed the Chesapeake over 100 years ago as well as the Pride of Baltimore (the reproduction topsail schooner and goodwill ship that was built in 1976 to celebrate the nation's Bicentennial) are also included here.

At the far right, not far from Camden yards, is the famous Bromo Seltzer Tower.  Built in 1911 by Captain Isaac Emerson, the inventor of the famous headache remedy, the tower measures 30 feet square and 260 feet high, with a clock face on each of its four sides.  Modeled after the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy it was the tallest building in Baltimore at the time.

Camden Yards in the background is a former railroad center which is now home to MLB's Baltimore Orioles.
