History
A view of the Capitol's west facade as seen from Pennsylvania Avenue. Electric streetcars similar to those in the painting were running by 1896 although horse-drawn carriages were still popular. Streetcars stopped servicing the city in 1932, by which time most visitors and commuters were travelling by train.
Every president since Jefferson has paraded down Pennsylvania Avenue on Inauguration Day, and funeral processions for presidents who have died in office, most recently that of John F. Kennedy, have followed this route as well.
