History

A scene of the west entrance of the Supreme Court Building.  Automobiles and trucks were just beginning to take their place alongside horse-drawn sleighs and carriages on the Washington streets at the turn of the century.  Bicycles and horse-drawn sleighs are still popular ways to get around the city at this point and photography (which was well established by the end of the 19th century) had become a favorite means of recording family gatherings.

Women campaigning for suffrage can be seen on the snowy steps, although it was 1920 before the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution gave them the right to vote.
